4 Weeks to go ...
  • Make arrangements with Royal Mail to get your post re-directed for a small charge (Royal Mail re-direction Service: 0345 777888)
  • Make a list of your creditors and notify them of your new address one by one. In most cases this can be done by a phone call, although some companies may require it in writing.
  • Don’t forget to notify your local Council  as you may be due a rebate on your Council Tax!
  • Notify Doctors/Dentists/Opticians etc. of your new address.
  • If you are moving out of the area, make a note to cancel milk, papers and pay off local bills.
  • Plan ahead, arrange and confirm your moving dates as far in advance as possible.

3 Weeks to go...

  • Sort out the parts of the house that can be all too easy to put off! I.e. the loft, garage, shed and other outbuildings. Think about having a car boot or garage sale.
  • Talk to your removal company about packing cases / materials. They should be able to tell you how many and what sizes you will need.
  • If you rent any appliances, don’t forget to make arrangements for them to be collected if necessary.
  • Send change of address cards to relatives and friends.
  • Don’t lose your right to vote!  Contact your local electoral office and ask for the relevant forms to be sent.

2 Weeks to go...
  • Dismantle furniture that has not been quoted for by your removal company, or furniture that is not designed to be moved when assembled.
  • Start to run down the contents of your fridge and freezer.
  • If you are moving away from the area, plan your trip and if possible make a map for the removal crew to take with them on the day , this can be useful and save time.
  • Organise to have gas, electricity and water meters read on the morning of your move and to have the telephone disconnected and any bills forwarded to your new house.
  • If you are taking your satellite dish with you, make arrangements to have it taken down.

    During the last week...

    • Contact your removal company to check details such as arrival time etc.
    • If you are doing your own packing, ensure that everything is packed and boxes are clearly labelled.
    • Use up your frozen food or give it away and defrost freezers.
    • Put all important documents and paperwork that you may need to hand into one box and keep it with you during the move.
    • Ensure that clothing is packed accordingly, but again, keep some items of clothing in a suitcase in case they are needed during the move. Remember to leave the hanging clothes on hangers as the removal company will have wardrobe cartons to transport them in on the day.
    • For safety reasons, ensure that any petrol or oil is drained from items such as lawnmowers.
    • If you can, label all your furniture clearly, for example using coloured labels and draw up a plan of your new home, marking rooms with the corresponding colours.

    Moving day...

    • Don’t pack the kettle!!
    • Ensure that all appliances e.g. washing machine, dishwasher have been disconnected prior to the removal crew arriving.
    • Ensure that all electrical items such as televisions, computers have been unplugged and are ready for moving. (If you do have any original boxes for these items, it is always better if they are placed back into them).
    • Make sure that all beds have been stripped and bedding placed into linen bags.
    • Be on hand when the removal crew arrive and throughout loading to answer any questions.
    • Once loading has been completed check that nothing has been forgotten
    • REMEMBER that it is your responsibility to see that nothing is moved by mistake.
    • Before the removal crew leave, check with the driver that he has the correct delivery details and contact telephone numbers in case they need to contact you on route.
